"THE POWERHOUSE" IS BORN!

I spent this past weekend camping at Pine Grove Furnace State Park (about an hour southwest of Harrisburg). It was my first two-nighter campout since I was Boy Scout a long, long time ago. I bought a pack of cheese dogs to skewer with a stick and cook over the fire late at night. Why is it the only time I eat cheese dogs is when I'm camping?

Speaking of hot dogs, big congratulations to fellow UEPa eater Carey "The Powerhouse" Poehlmann for damn near winning his Windmill hot dog qualifing match and his FIRST EVER eating contest this past Sunday in New Jersey. That's him at right. He placed third with 6.67 hot dogs eaten in 5 minutes (they're much bigger than Nathan's dogs), only a quarter of a dog behind the winner. His showing earns him a spot at the Windmill championships on August 11.
The results were reported on the AICE website and via Eat Feats.

One thing about AICE that you have to respect is that they get the results of their contests out there pretty quickly. That's important not only to fans but to eaters. Let's hope MLE can find the resources (i.e. paper, pencil and a cellphone) to do the same with this year's contests.

As a fan and an eater, I think I speak for everyone when I say it's not too much to ask that full results -- one through 10 finishers WITH totals -- be online by the end of the day on the Monday following the contest (aren't they supposed to be tracking 1-10 with totals anyhow for the new points system?). Or why wait till Monday? Just e-mail the results to OJ over at Eat Feats and he/she will get them up THAT DAY. It's really not that hard.

Thanks for the press, Dave. I think Arnie has a thing for alliteration. Powerhouse is good though. Beats "has yet to be given a nickname" because I couldn't fit it on a shirt.
I was disappointed at my results, I didn't know what to expect with those dogs. I asked Chowhound if I could participate in the next one just for fun. I am going to go for 8, I think I can do it.

Ooooh!!!
Trying to practice for the finals by entering multiple qualifiers?

What happens if you win said "second qualifier"?

Would #4 from the first qualifier then advance to the finals, or will your participation in additional qualifiers be counted only as exhibitions?

I would vote for the latter!
Hopefully, I'll see you @ the finals!

It is just an exhibition. The Chew and The American both did it this last time. D, did you get a bye or are you qualifying?

So I take it you're not doing Nathan's?

I don't know, Pete, you'll have to ask Kathy that one. As of yet I am still on. Maybe I should be going by a pseudonym to hide my identity. Wear a mask and call myself El Lunchadore. Hey dave, you could be El Munchadore, we could do tag team eating contests together.

A tag team, I like that. You rough up the food a bit, eat what you can and then I come in and finish up.

I don't see why Carey can't compete in the Nate's qualifiers too. His affiliation is still undetermined. Sort of like a free agent.

I think the IFOCE guys may be a little protective though, even though I don't have any contracts, the fact that I participated in an AICE event could make them change their mind. Remember, the AICE is a "rival league" and we're a bunch of Soch's, Pony boy.

WOW!
Thats awesome Carey! And first contest too.
Does anybody have any video of the event? I'd like to see how the food compares to the Nathans ones

Thank you, steakbellie, and yes I have video, although it is from the crowd. Not that close up.

The dog is twice as big, the skin is more like a sausage, and the bun is toasted. I never had one before the contest. It was quite a surprise.

Ok gents, three things here:

1)Good job Carey-looking forward to the finals...

2)TuT, where are you qualifying at? Every participant has to qualify in some form or another unless automatic bye (which sometimes happens)

3)Awesome video. Please tell me you got that judges phone number behind you. That's who I'm hopin' to see in the finals, not gonna lie.

Thanks "eatin' Ian" Hickman. As a matter of fact, I picked her up with the line "so, I know Ian Hickman, wanna go back to my place?"
Yeah, there is a list of all the byes somewhere, I know you are on it, Ian. I think it was the top three from last year, which for some reason I cannot find the results for right now.
You can also write Arnie and beg for a bye. But I don't see why anyone would miss an opportunity to throw down some deliscious dogs.

well, if I knew where the next qualifier was, I might tell you where I'm gonna qualify.

I propose UEPa represent Windmill strongly!

However.... I'm a VERY busy man this summer and fitting anything into my schedule is gonna be tough.
Have the Windmill people call me. I'll let 'em know when I can be there.

Peas!

1. Thanks Gilly. I owe it all to fighting you and Shoff for food on the mess decks.
2. Yeah, UEPa should definately dominate the championships. Dave, are you going to try qualifying? Oh, wait, UEPa and AICE aren't rival leagues, are they?
3. We are getting pretty close to finals for Windmill not to have the qualifiers listed.
4. Anyone entering Quickchek this year?
5. Anyone up for creating a travelling tour of competitive eaters this summer where 4 or 5 guys go cross country for a month and enter or host amatuer and pro level competitions at various fairs and carnivals? We could have a camera crew document all of it for DVD. Would take alot of prelim work to schedule everything though. But think of the fun!

Carey,
I think thats a pretty darn good result for 1/4lbs dogs! I'm still having trouble with the video, but will try to view it tonight from home.

Thanks, SB.
I noticed some trouble myself, but if you click on the heading above it, you will be directed to the spot where all three videos are, and shouldn't have a problem watching them there. I might just put them on youtube instead. Myspace video sucks.
Derek, I have a job. It's boring. I need to get out and live. For a month at least.

That video is great! The judge too. There's a good hot dog related pick-up line in there somewhere, I know. I can't guarantee it would work though.

Did Arnie call you Carey "The Pennsylvanian" Poehlmann? "The Powerhouse" is much better. If you don't want that to be your permanent eater nickname, you'd better change it soon. Those things have a way of sticking.

Gents gents gents. CE season is literally amongst us with this weekend beginning what appears to be a solid three months of contests almost every weekend. Some with and some without qualifiers. In response to those questions about AICE qualifiers I can say that for both Windmill and Quikcheck, they will MORE THAN LIKELY be in the same place last year. Reference competitiveeaters.com 2006 events/news for more details. Most Windmill and Quikcheck qualifiers were absent literally right up until the finals so be patient. Dave/TuT, don't procrastinate for either. Get your asses in there. They are big events and the after parties are definitely worth it. The top 3 from both events have an automatic bye in the finals. As for the month long excursion, um, good idea but you'll have to count this guy out. Extended weekend, yes, month, not so much.

Dude-eronomie!!
If I can't qualify, (much like QC last year) I'll come as either an MC or Guest Judge.
But I do love me some hotdogs and italian subs..... it's not about procrastination... it's about everyone getting f-ing married!!!
