UEPa MEMBERS UNITE!

So the UEPa is trying to figure out when our next meeting is, but before we determine when we need to also nail down where. Sean Gordon mentioned a possible trip to Dennys in November (is that still happening Sean?), but a recent team hamburger eating contest at Dennys came and went without a UEPa invite, leaving all of us feeling a little jilted.

Enter honorary PA resident and UEPa member, Ian Hickman. In a comment to a recent post, Mr. Whoopie (he prefers "Mr. Pie," but for different reasons), mentioned a somehow overlooked mecca of mega-sized meals called Niner Diner. The potential meeting place is located in the awesomely-named Nanty Glo, Pennsylvania, which is about two-and-a-half hours west of Harrisburg and 90 minutes east of Pittsburgh.

Of course, it also features a giant burger challenge. Twenty-two bucks gets you a three pound burger and five pounds of fries. Eat it all in two hours and it's free. Check out the menu here. They've also got a "hubcap pancakes" menu option which, at just $5.99, has to be the cheapest giant food challenge ever. How the hell have I never heard about this place?!

So the question is, if our next meeting isn't at Dennys (don't worry, we'll be back next summer), when are we going to the Niner Diner? I'll get us started by throwing out some Saturday's when I'm free: November 17, December 1, December 8, December 15 and December 29. January is mostly up-for-grabs too, but I'm hungry, so let's see if we can get this thing on the '07 calendar.

Any of those dates work for anyone else? And for our ranked IFOCE UEPa members, don't worry, you can come along and "watch."

Each and every one of the dates mentioned by President Munch also work for Founder Tut.
I second the motion.

That's twice in two days he has referred to himself in the third person. Derek, you a star now?

They work for me too. I would be a little upset going to Denny's and not seeing my name on the wall, I got a feeling they never put it up there.

Carey - Derek's and Ian's names are on the two pound board at Denny's - I didn't notice yours, though. You may have been immediately above theirs. As far as violating any "rules" concerning being IFOCE ranked and a UEPA member, and eating - well...

Wow, that's great.... especially since Tut's never ordered a 2 lb burger.

I've been to Denny's once. When all of UEPa went.... and I actually bowed out rather than work the whole hour to finish the burger.
I opted for a more comfortable ride home and a night of drinking.

Derek, the pub challenger is the two pound burger (weight of meat)
And that is three times now.
now I am really upset, that wanker didn't finish his, and he is up there.

He called you a wanker!

You in for our trip to Niner Diner Bill?

Thanks for the details Bill. I didn't think they'd actually put our names up there but after seeing they did but NOT Mark's, that sucks. I am sure it was a simple case of misunderstanding OR they really love the Payne.

I'd like to throw out there noon, Saturday, December 1. It's right after T-Day stuff and before Christmas parties get going. It'd be great if we could get Carey. Dave, Payne, Sean, Steak, Bill, Bob, Pete, Pete M. Elliot, etc. to go. I mean shit. Nothing is really going on EITHER schedule at that time!

As for my P.S.-
Let's clear things up...TuT has been there at least twice: once to bow out of and tell me to quit the "Stelnick" and once to bow out of the two pounder for German TV. Hey, just sayin...

My bad... maybe it WAS Carey's name on the board, and not Derek's. I should have took a picture. Ian's is definitely there, though.
Dave - it's possible that I may be available for the Niner Diner - as Ian noted, there is what - ONE contest slated for both organizations? And besides, if IFOCE put anything up, I wouldn't be INVITED anyway. However... I have a bad habit of saying I'll be at a UEPa event and not being able to make it. So, pencil me in - at this point, I don't think I have anything going on December 1.
I don't think I'll attempt the burger there though - unless the whole burger is three pounds (not just meat). The five pounds of fries are going to be killer.

Derek, are you going to be available to bow out of the Niner challenge on the 1st? Just sayin...

I vote either the first or sometime in Jan, any later in Dec and I'll be busy getting into the holiday spirit, ugh.

Both Denny's and the new place are gonna be a long ass drive so I don't know that I have a preference.

I did a quick google search for the Niner Diner and I'm hoping this one isn't a franchise...

I don't care which restaurant it's held at, I just want to be there!

Dave and Carey: I would love to meet you guys in-person. Ian and Pete: I would like to see you both again (soon). And I always enoy meeting new competitive eaters.

Just out of curiousity, are there any (other) girls that come to UEPa get-togethers?

That sounds like one of the best places around. To bad I am not around Penn. as I would love to show up and watch if you know what I mean. Please keep us out-of-towners on what goes down.

Pete, what do you mean beat? Where did that come from?

Jill, Philly Guy is usually the only other girl that shows up, unless someone's girlfriend tags along.

Carey... hmm... Pierogies? Pittsburgh?
Tut will leave it at that.
Tut missed it b/c his dog died that morning. Why weren't you there again?

Ian...Whoops! Tut forgot about that first trip w/ himself, Ian, Pete and Mega. Dang, what did Tut even eat that day?

Again, all day's mentioned work for Tut.

We'll set up the first UEPA webcam so Hall and Skinnyboy can be there with us.

So let's lock in the date, Dave. It seems everyone is down for the first. What do you say?

I did call the diner for details. The waitress said no one has completed the 'Tiny' burger challenge but didn't mention the pancake stack. Apparently the burger has a pound of cheese. Sounds like it is another Denny's type where it's advertised as 2 lbs but weighs 6! BRING THE SCALE!

And Bill is right, fries are no joke. You may finish the fries but puke halfway through the burger and vice versa. All the grease is killer. Trust me. It'll be fun as hell though.

Blogger Carey said...

Derek, I didn't compete because I really wasn't in the mood to deal with the bullshit that was going on with the scheduling, plus I wasn't in the mood to talk to you that day either. Had I eaten, I wouldn't have stopped halfway through because someone else was going to win.

Well, stoppping halfway through a 5 minute contest would be ridiculous.
But I have no shame in stopping halfway through an hour long 6 lb burger challenge.
I know my limits, and capacity...and that's not my game. I'm all speed, baby.

I'd elaborate, on your excuse, and our pre-contest confrontation/conversation, but this isn't the forum to do so.

Now that this seems like a sure thing, I decided to "practice" by going to McDonald's. I had a Angus Burger Meal -- Angus burger, large fries, large drink -- AND a Grilled Chicken Sandwhich.

I felt pretty proud of myself...until I found out that the huge meal I had just finished was only 2lbs, 2oz., and the Niner Diner's challenge is 8lbs! No wonder there aren't more women in competitive eating.

I'm in deep trouble.

Mega Munch, The Niner Diner is only about 10 minutes from my house, so I would love to join you guys when you make the trip. I have finished the pancake challenge, in fact Beautiful Brian once had pics of it on his site, and a story along with it. The pancakes are harder than they sound...you need at least a whole bottle of syrup to get them down. If you need anymore info on the place, just let me know.

JILL - You're psyching yourself out! Just do your best and save room for dessert.

BIG B - I didn't realize you were so close to the Niner. It'd be awesome if you were there too. It's about time you made it out to a UEPa meeting.

I am going to do the burger challenge. There is no way I would be able to finish the pancakes, I need half a bottle of syrup for just one stack.

Jill, try the Wendys value menu challenge. It would be a better guage of ability.

Blogger Dave S. said...

Yeah, I was under the assumption that we were all doing the burger challenge. I mean, c'mon, it's the UEPa.

But if anyone wants to throw down with some flapjacks (and they're serving them at noon), that's cool too. I'd like to at least see what they look like so I can simulate it at home.

Damn awesome turnout this is shaping up to be. I'm going to make a few calls to see if a few others can make it.

Dave has a good point with doing the burgers but whatever folks want to do is cool. The burger is what Dave, Carey and myself will be trying at least. BUT it's more like we're doing the fries with a side of burger. Wait til you see what five pounds of fries looks like, I mean seriously...
