Eat Feats just reported that, for the first time ever, there will be a cash prize during the Nathan's Famous hot dog contest on Coney Island. The IFOCE has split the $20,000 purse among the first five finishers, with first place getting $10,000.

It's great that there's finally some money on the line in MLE's crown jewel. Some people think that just getting to the table is reward enough, but I'll bet if any of them are at the table this year and happen to finish in the top five, they won't be refusing their giant cardboard checks. Personally, I think the money should go all the way down to 18th place. Sort of as an added reward for all the trouble the eaters went through just to get to the table (and to prevent anyone from pulling a Jed). Something like this would work well. Sorry if my math is wrong:

1st - $10,000
2nd - $2,500
3rd - $1,250
4th - $1,000
5th - $700
6th - $650
7th - $600
8th - $550
9th - $500
10th - $450
11th - $400
12th - $350
13th - $300
14th - $250
15th - $200
16th - $150
17th - $100
18th - $50

Dammit! now I am pissed at not getting a chance. :) I think they should have a flat $200 for everyone participating, as a "good job qualifying" and then use a scale for prizes down to like 8th place.

I don't know about the per diem, but I do think they get airfare and hotel.

Yes on the airfare and hotel. I've heard in the past that they do get some per diem.

By the way, I wonder what they per diem is supposed to cover? Definitely not food. Most of it is probably spent on post-contest beer.

So what is the amount for a qualifier to go to coney island? Is it different for each person? What is the per diem? I remember the last Nathan's documentary showed Koby on the bus going over, didn't look like even 10 people on it, does everyone get a hotel room and then bus over at the same time?

Not sure about your first two questions (or if the per diem even exists for sure). As for "The Bus of Champions", I'm not really sure where all the eaters get picked up for that thing. I'm guessing the easiest thing to do is pick them up at whatever hotel they're staying in.

well this all leads me to believe that none of this is happening. Is there anyone reading this that actually participated in a Nathan's contest and can verify any of this?

Dude, EVERYONE is reading this. They just like a to keep a low profile. It helps if you ask for advice by name.

Yo X, what's the deal with the bus?

Hey Joey, what do you spend your fat per diem check on?

Pat, which hotel are you guys staying in and where's the night-before party at?
